The construction industry is the single largest employer of migrant labourers, the poorest of the poor in Indian cities. Living on construction sites until their work is complete, they move from one site to another. In Mumbai alone, close to half a million men and women work in this sector. Their lives are characterized by insecurity of wages, dangerous working conditions, and lack of access to any kind of welfare. The children of these workers, estimated to be about 80,000 in number, are even more vulnerable. Since both parents work, they are left to fend for themselves. Without access to day care centres, schools, and health services, they suffer from malnutrition, injury, and illness and are deprived of an education.

Since 1972, Mobile Creches, Mumbai (Mumbai Mobile Creches since 1 April 2007) has been the only NGO specifically supporting the health, education and safety of children living on construction sites iin Mumbai. Promoting well-designed, innovative programmes that focus on and pay special attention to the needs of the young child, our work on the construction site is part of our overarching goal of supporting more enriching and inclusive futures for all children. Thus our slogan - 'Futures Under Construction'.
